Game Preview | Blue Bombers at Elks

We open with an easy exercise to set up this week's Winnipeg Blue Bombers trip to Edmonton to best capture the consistent inconsistency of life in Bomberland in 2026...
It's not complicated. All your humble agent did was simply jot down the Blue Bombers results this season in W's and L's and the chronological line is telling:
W-L-L-W-W-W-L-L-W-L-W-L-W-L-L-W
And -- ta-da! -- that's exactly how you get to an 8-8 record: one three-game winning streak; three two-game skids and then a bunch of W's and L's offsetting each other.
That inconsistency has revealed itself from one week to the next, one half to the next, one drive to the next for this team. Stealing and paraphrasing a line Winston Churchill once used to describe Russia, it fits the '26 Blue Bombers to a tee:
"They are a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma."
What's critical now for the Blue Bombers is to add a few more W's to that list and make a late season push that makes them less of a riddle, eliminate the mystery and exorcise the narrative they are an enigma.
Now would be the perfect time, after all, to turn last week's impressive win over the Calgary Stampeders into a run to the playoffs and beyond.
"Exactly. And that's the mindset -- continue to get better," said veteran defensive end Willie Jefferson in a chat with bluebombers.com. "There's that thought that you want to be the team that is hot going into the playoffs. We want to start that right now.
"We let some games go earlier in the season. Now is the time to come back, button it up, clean some things up and finish those games.
"This is a game we want to have. Now we've just got to go out there and take it."
A victory by the Blue Bombers would not only constitute the club's first winning streak since July, but it would also guarantee a spot in the Grey Cup derby for the 10th straight season and that's significant given how up and down the campaign has been through 16 games.
WEST DIVISION
WPG WIN OR CGY LOSS = WPG clinches playoff berth.
EDM WIN OR BC LOSS = EDM claims first place and the right to host the Western Final on Saturday, November 7.
WPG LOSS + SSK WIN = SSK clinches playoff berth.
SSK WIN + CGY LOSS = SSK clinches playoff berth.
WPG LOSS OR BC WIN = BC clinches the right to host a playoff game.
Note: SSK and CGY do not have a path forward to host a playoff game.
"We've just got to find some consistency. We've been inconsistent all year, as you can tell by our record," said defensive tackle Cam Lawson. "Finding that consistency down the stretch is going to be key."
And so... how do you find that consistency?
"That's a great question," added Lawson. "And the great thing about football is it's not about just one person. Everybody has to be doing the right thing all the time. When one person makes a mistake, we have to cover for them and that takes everybody on the field.
"We know what we can do. We've seen what it looks like when great plays are made and when we have great games. It's just how we find that formula every time.
"That win last week... that's just shows we've got good grit. We didn't turn on each other. We knew what we had to do going into the next week and we rolled with it. You never give up on that stuff, and you've just got to keep trusting your teammates."
Yes, last weekend's win over Calgary got the Blue Bombers right back into the playoff discussion, especially considering they own the tiebreaker with the Stampeders having won two of three games, and with the Saskatchewan Roughriders after splitting their two contests but winning the points differential.
And in case of a three-way tie should the Blue Bombers, Stamps and Riders all finish 9-9, Winnipeg holds the edge there as they finished 3-2 in the five games between the two teams while Saskatchewan was 2-2 and Calgary 2-3.
What last Saturday's result also did was energize the clubhouse.
"We needed a win and it proved to everyone we can win a must-win game which is important at this stage of the season. It's huge," said defensive back Michael Griffin II. "If you lose that game, there's probably a lot of doubt in the locker room, but this doesn't just keep us afloat, it keeps the vibe positive.
"We're cognizant of our big picture and being inconsistent throughout the year, but we're just worried about winning now. We don't want to put our destiny in anyone else's hands. We want to take control of what we can handle.
"We think we can beat anybody at any time. We want to keep this going and build momentum and put ourselves in the best situation possible.

NO MORE SELF-INFLICTED WOUNDS
Winnipeg's two previous meetings with the Elks -- a 23-18 home loss in late June and a 22-19 setback in Edmonton in August -- are a microcosm of the Blue Bombers this season.
In that home loss in June, the Blue Bombers rallied from a 17-0 hole to take an 18-17 lead in the fourth quarter before Cody Fajardo engineered a game-winning drive which culminated with a TD with 53 seconds left before a late desperation counter-drive ended on Edmonton's 11-yard line as time expired. What was especially telling in that game was just how thorough the self-inflicted wounds were with Winnipeg losing three of its six fumbles, with three sacks surrendered and two missed field goals.
The loss in Edmonton in August featured many of the same themes. This time the Blue Bombers built a 16-zip advantage in the first half, then bogged down in the second half before rallying to tie the game with 101 seconds left. Yet with the defence unable to hold, the Elks got enough to set up a walk-off 40-yard field goal for their win.
"Those Edmonton games specifically, it came down to seven plays here, eight plays there," said Griffin II. "We view it as when we play our best, that's who we really are. That's our standard."
MORE '8-BALL' MAGIC
There are any number of metrics to trot out here as the key to the Blue Bombers win last weekend, but there's no sense digging too far into the stats sheet.
Reason #1 was the work of QB Zach Collaros, who not only completed 19-of-27 passes for 349 yards and a pair of TDs, he seemed to will his team to victory with his on-field handiwork and the upbeat energy he brought to the practice week following the team's beatdown in Montreal.
Collaros was named one of the CFL Players of the Week on Wednesday and QB1 was certainly worthy of the salute. Consider this, too: the Blue Bombers are 4-2 in his last six starts as he's completed 69.8 percent of his passes for 1,568 yards with eight TDs against four interceptions.
Collaros praised the team's energy and physicality in the win over Calgary earlier this week adding, "Play with high energy, play with a lot of joy, a lot of fun.
"You've got to handle your business each and every week and like I said last week, what we want to accomplish is still in front of us and to be able to control your own destiny is a great thing."
"FINISH, FINISH, FINISH"
We touched on this briefly above, but the two losses against Edmonton earlier this year also featured the same ending -- the club in position to nail down a W against a division rival only to see it slip away when it mattered most.
The first on a TD inside the final minute; the second on a walk-off field goal.
"We as a defence went back and looked at those games intricately," said Jefferson. "The penalties on second down kept them on the field, then they made those plays in the second half to keep them on the field or in range for field goals... we absolutely have to get off the field and give the ball back to our offence."
That's also one of the themes that emerged in last week's win over Calgary. While the defence did give up some scores, it also stopped the Stamps on two critical two-point conversion attempts.
Finishing like that again will be critical in Edmonton and down the stretch.
"We know what we can do and we know where we want to land at the end," Jefferson added. "I told you this last week, we don't want to be looking at all the different playoff scenarios. We already got that speech. We don't want to live off having that team losing or this team losing.
"We want to go in and play good Winnipeg football in every aspect. And we need to finish, finish, finish."
THE LINEUP: The Blue Bombers have made just one change to the lineup from last week's win over Calgary with LB Lane Novak coming on for LB Jaylen Smith, who was nicked up late in the game.
Smith has been moved to the one-game injured list, joining LB Michael Ayers. QB Taylor Elgersma and DE Nuer Gatkuoth remain on the reserve roster.
The six-game injured list features defensive backs Cam Allen, Ethan Ball, Jaiden Woodbey, and Jonathan Moxey, linebackers Brody Clark, Dylan Hazen and Jovan Santos-Knox, DE Matt Jaworski and WR Gavin Cobb.
